Annotated paper:Baer K, et al. "Postsynaptic clustering of gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors by the gamma3 subunit in vivo" Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1999 Oct 26;96(22):12860-5 PMID:10536013
Figure(s):Fig.4
Annotation description:Fi.g4: "In RTN of P14 γ20/0 brain, staining for the γ3 subunit revealed prominent punctate IR, indicative of synaptically clustered receptors. Moreover, γ3 subunit staining was colocalized with the α3 subunit (Fig. (Fig.44a), the most abundant α subunit in the RTN (20), and with gephyrin (Fig. (Fig.44b). Thus, in γ20/0 RTN, the endogenous γ3 subunit appears to contribute to postsynaptic GABAA receptors containing the α3 subunit, thereby preventing the loss of GABAA receptor clusters."

Notes:
- Based on the known transmembrane topology of the protein, the "integral component of ... membrane" term was chosen.
- Authors claim localization to the postsynaptic specialization membran, but this data on itself does not show this. I have annotated to the less specific term 'integral component of synaptic membrane (GO:0099699)'.
