Annotation description:In this study, Huttner et al. isolated synaptic vesicles (SVs) from rat brain to virtual homogeneity (Fig. 6). Using an antibody specific for synapsin 1, a high enrichment of the protein in the purified SV fraction was observed (Figs. 3, 4). The interaction between synapsin and synaptic vesicles was abolished when the ionic strength of the medium was increased, suggesting an electrostatic component in the membrane association (Fig. 9). Also, they showed that phosphorylation of synapsin at the domain involved in the binding to synaptic vesicles decreases the binding between synapsin I and synaptic vesicles (Figs. 11-13).

- Synapsin 1 has a region that binds phospholipids with a preference for negatively charged species. For this reason the 'extrinsic component ...' variant was selected.

Additional literature:In this paper, De Camilli P., et al. investigated the subcellular localization of synapsin1 in the nerve terminal using electron microscopy. They found that synapsin 1 is localized in at the cytoplasmic surface of the synaptic vesicles (Figure 3). @ PMID:6404911
