Annotation description:SERT immunoreactivity can be found on the plasma membrane in axon terminals (but not at the active zone) and in axons of serotonergic neurons, and rarely in dendrites and spines of neurons that are not 5-HT positive at the ultrastructural level.

Pre-embedding peroxidase labelling (Fig. 1) and immunogold-silver labelling of SERT was performed in the Nucleus accumbens (Nac). Immunogold-labelling demonstrates the presence of SERT on the plasma membrane in axons and axon terminals (Fig.2, 3, 4).

Antibodies: antipeptide (C611-630 and E387-401) and anti-fusion protein antisera (N1-85). In control experiments, samples were processed for immunoperoxidase or immunogold labelling with the omission of primary antisera or with antisera that have been pre-absorbed with the peptide. No KO-control.
